Spring day in Rahchacha!

Filed under: Miscellaneous — Judy @ 1:43 pm

Unbelievable day! Warm, full of sun, da birdies iz singin’ . . . What more could a gal want? Other than maybe a few flowers blooming. But things are perking along as they should be. Little green sprouts all over the place, buds are fattening up, the pussy willows are out, and the quince is showing a tad of color. Spring! It sure is good for the soul.

Sunshine! and bats

Whoa! So much sunshine, yet so cold out there still. The snowdrops are still blooming, and the daffys and narcissus have popped up about 3 inches. We will surely have at least one more snow and they will get blasted. Had to take a bat out of a friend’s garden yesterday. She was mucking around, taking some of the leaves off, tidying up and getting some fresh air when he/she popped up and scared her witless. This apparently was one of the red bats (more info here) that find winter protection in leaf litter. Off with it to a new home in a nearby park!

Bottle trees

Filed under: Miscellaneous — Judy @ 3:29 pm

Pam at Digging posted about her new bottle tree and it got me to thinking about the one we used to see as we traveled to our grandparents’ home for holidays. It was a big tree with at least a hundred bottles tied to it, all different colors, shapes, and sizes. Not as pretty as Pam’s, but definitely a landmark, particularly as bottle trees are rarely found up here in the north. Apparently, bottle trees are supposed to capture bad spirits at night and allow them to be destroyed in the morning light.  This would be a VERY good thing to have in this economy so I’m collecting bottles for my own bottle tree, beginning right now!  More images and history on bottle trees can be found here and here.
