Yes!!! Spring is definitely here – I heard the peepers last night! Growing up in the floodplain of the Allegheny River, we often heard their deafening chorus – it was one of the magical rites of spring. But here in suburbia, I don’t hear those teeny guys so much. It has been fairly warm and it rained yesterday, just the formula for peepers to emerge from hibernation and activate their vocal sacs to attract mates. I’m not a frog (although I do have a seester we nicknamed Froggie at one point), but I know I was attracted! Google ‘spring peeper’ for more info. Wikipedia, that mecca of internet information/misinformation, does have a sound track of their chorus in case you don’t have the real thing nearby.

Sunshine! and bats
Whoa! So much sunshine, yet so cold out there still. The snowdrops are still blooming, and the daffys and narcissus have popped up about 3 inches. We will surely have at least one more snow and they will get blasted. Had to take a bat out of a friend’s garden yesterday. She was mucking around, taking some of the leaves off, tidying up and getting some fresh air when he/she popped up and scared her witless. This apparently was one of the red bats (more info here) that find winter protection in leaf litter. Off with it to a new home in a nearby park!

Birdfeeder and squirrels
Check out this squirrel-thwarting mechanism! We have had this soda bottle arrangement on our feeder pole for three years and nary a squirrel has tried to climb it to the feeder. I found this idea on the interwebz someplace and it really works.

Midnight Bunny
We have a wild bunny that appears under our birdfeeder to dine on all the spilled seed that the crazy birds throw off. However, this bunny does not appear in the early morning or early evening hours, but at midnight or thereabouts! Guess that’s the only time there is room at the table!
